I just stubble across this Site!
It's great to see people still interested in Win 3.x
I haven't used it for many years now.

I plan to install 3.1 on an old 486 Pentium 2 PC I have lying around for fun, but it would be nice to surf the Net and do basic stuff.

Does anybody have any experience with Viruses and Malware if connecting to the Internet with such an old OS

Are there any Firewalls available for 3.x ?
What Web Browsers are there other than IE if any that still work?

I doubt there are any Anti Virus Apps available, so how likely are morden Viruses to attack a 3.x system?
Are there old Viruses still milling around that could do damage?

Just curious to have some other views on the subject.

I remember an old software included with DOS : Microsoft Antivirus. I think it's quite outdated

You could use Netscape 3 instead of MSIE. MSIE does not work on my 3.x so I use Netscape. Just disable Javascript error messages and it'll be fine. :)

Hi zmbl,

Thanks for the advise.
I'll try to dig up a copy of Netscape. Last time I used that was in 97.
Might even still have an original Disk somewhere, not sure what version though!
I feel a Rumage around the Loft coming on.

Will be interesting to see how usable this old Toshiba will be (100Mhz P2 8Mb RAM) with 3.11

I was thinking of using a Lite version of Linux, I never thought of going back to 3.11 but it will be much easier to install provided my old original Disks still work.

Hey,

No problem, but you can download Netscape 3 here => viewtopic.php?t=2884 (the third link is the English version). :)

Good luck with all that stuff :)

There's Internet Explorer 5.03, but it's known to be quite unstable. That's what I use anyway, it still works enough. Besides that, there's Netscape 4 (version 3 is even more outdated than 4, so I wouldn't recommend it), and Opera (don't know which version is the last win16 one).

Concerning Antiviruses, there's Norton Antivirus 4 that has the latest definitions available for win16 (Aug. 2002).

I don't know of any firewall app, but if you're in a NAT-based LAN like I am, you should be safe.

netscape 2,3 and 4 are all different

netscape and MSIE
complement each other
get both if you can

also for some pages opera seems work best

for win3x they must have
quit making virouses
about when they quit
selling antivirous software

You know, we can see easily, you use a traductor because you don't erase the seconds traductions like (work) or (office).
And for the last time, you must stop to post useless things in this forum or else ...

I will try to say this sentence with differents words :
"You need to have an Antivirus for Windows 3.11. Internet will only work if you connect your compter to Internet with a cable.
Note : Windows 3.11 don't support Wireless technologies so you can only connect to intenet with a cable

I think f4cpx would said this

I think my english is correct. Don't blame me if my english is not correct because i am in "4ème" (or 4th Grade) and my parrents don't know how to speak English
