In the past, even before the 8086/8088, there were the 8080, 6800 and 6502. The personal computing started with these processors.
These CPUs were typically designed by small teams, composed of only two or three persons.
Someone made the 6502 diagram ; you can download it below
Each symbol represents a FET transitor, itself composed of two silicon wafers (first with positive ions, second with negative ones). In short, a FET transitor is a sort of relay used in numerical circuit

I own an oric-1 with its 6502 processor. Although that system now runs hot, it still works!!!
