Why 7zip?

there is no win3x program to even look at the format
maby for

but for 7zip?

We need high compression to safe bandwidth and storage space. LZMA compression used with 7zip archive seems to be the best compromise actually. Extractor is available for DOS, Linux and many operation system. contrary to ZIP it's opensouce (very important for us) and does not consume much memory enough to extract under a 12megs 486. bzip2 is also good but not wildly used under DOS/Windoze FAT world but 7zip was designed for.

just incase you did not know
most of those formats are now opensource...
check it out

perhaps 7zip is nice for linux or win95+
it looks like you've found a nice format that is very handy
for some one who is not using win3x

I'm programing in and for windows 3.1 right now

yes for me a comprimize is required as
there is neither a win16 or win32s app that can use the format

zip compression was designed with slow computers in mind
heh dont suppose you've noticed how long it takes to work with them
on a real 286-486
heh .zip works on even more computers than 7zip does

the 7zip compression ratio is not that much greater than the other formats
and as I will only be downloading rather small files(56kbps modem)
the benifit for me is very small

since it seems there is not a single 7zip win3x programer...
surly this decision is not coming from an active win3x user?

dos rules
Windows 3.1 ROCKS

...dude. I've been extracting 7-zip archives in DOS for years.

Either this: ... /file/7zip 4.57/
...or this: with this:

(I'm using the latter right now.)

heh thanks DR Frankenstein
yes I know you told me
you use linux and the latest win vers
just as I told you I do not

it still does not make either of those programs
win3x apps

thanks for your help DR Frankenstein
awating your win3x opensource program release
I'm sure it will be excelent

sorry to bother you
glad to hear my compromise is working out well for you

its cool
just count 1 win3x user(currently using windows 3.x)
as recomending a change to a more compatable format

You cannot store any files on an IRC, can you ?

You can't, unless someone is kind enough to provide a bot or a permanent client with a fserve service enabled.

Someone who has enough disk space and bandwidth to host all the stuff, of course...

yes we should wait till the future

ahh yes in the future when...
they come out with high speed internet
and terabyte hard drives
when people can host files on irc

only in that sort of far off future could such an idea work

for the moment we can dream eh?

I didn't say it was impossible.

Since the 6th August, our archives've used the more common zip format (instead of the opensource 7z).

Much more user-friendly: all Windows versions since Millennium Edition natively support the zip archives!

More retro-friendly too: it's possible to extract zip archives on all IBM PC compatibles (even the 16-bit ones).

I've updated our User Guide to remove the reference to 7-Zip.
