Bmap is a picture viewer (JPEG, GIF, PNG, Bitmap formats) for Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 and later. Lightweight, I found that app very practical at the time my newest PC still ran Windows 2000, an operating system without native viewer - except small pictures on explorer and Internet Explorer -, unlike Windows XP with its shimgvw.dll (aka "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"). Besides, that program has a behavior quite similar to shimgvw.dll because only one instance can be loaded at the same moment (if you open another file with bmap, the new image simply replaces the older one in the app windows). There is no installation: you have to associate picture files to automatically open them with bmap. If I correctly remember, some exotic formats (such as 16-bit bitmap instead of 24-bit?) are not properly supported, that's why I eventually choose an alternative.

Bmap est une visionneuse d'images JPEG, GIF, PNG et Bitmap pour Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 et ultérieur. Très légère, j'ai trouvé ce logiciel très pratique à l'époque où mon PC le plus récent tournait sous Windows 2000, système d'exploitation dépourvu de visionneuse native - si on exclut la miniature de l'explorateur et Internet Explorer -, contrairement à Windows XP avec son shimgvw.dll (alias "Aperçu des images et des télécopies Windows"). D'ailleurs, le comportement de ce programme est assez similaire à shimgvw.dll puisqu'une seule instance peut être ouverte à la fois (si vous ouvrez un autre fichier avec bmap, la nouvelle image remplacera l'ancienne dans la fenêtre de l'application). Il n'y a pas d'installation : il vous suffit de modifier les associations de fichiers images pour les ouvrir automatiquement avec bmap. Si mes souvenirs ne sont pas trop embrouillés, des formats exotiques (bitmap 16-bit au lieu de 24-bit ?) n'étaient pas bien gérés, ce qui m'a poussé à choisir une alternative.
