MS-DOS is the first OS released by Microsoft. MS-DOS takes it's roots from Quick'n dirty DOS (QDOS, which was quickly bought by Microsoft and which was itself inspired from CP/M). This was first the version made for PC Compatible of PC-DOS but after Microsoft and IBM's separation, this became the reference OS for almost every PC during the 80's and half of the 90's.![[fr]](./ext/win3x/customcode/images/fr.gif){kind=small}
MS-DOS est le premier OS sorti par Microsoft. Très fortement inspiré de Quick'n dirty DOS (QDOS, qui avait été racheté in extremis par Microsoft et qui était lui-même inspiré de CP/M), c'est à la base la version pour les compatible PC de PC-DOS, mais suite à la séparation peu à peu de Microsoft et d'IBM, c'est devenu l'os de référence pour tous les PCs (ou presque) durant les années 80 et la moitié des années 90. MS-DOS 3.3 was released in august 1987. It adds the support for 1.44MB floppy disks and multiple partitions of 32MB.

MS-DOS 4.0
MS-DOS 4.0, released in 1988, added the support of 2GB HDDs and a graphical user interface (DOSSHELL). However it was not properly tested and was bug ridden, causing system crashes and loss of data. It was entirely written by IBM. MS-DOS 4.0 uses 110K of RAM.
A multitasking version of MS-DOS 4.0 was sold in '86/'87, but the system was completely different from MS-DOS 4.0 and had no legacy.

Il y a eu également une version multitâche de MS-DOS 4.0 vendue en 1986/1987, mais le système n'a strictement rien à voir avec celui de MS-DOS 4.0 et il n'a eu aucune descendance.
MS-DOS 4.01
MS-DOS 4.01 was released in November 1988 to fix the bugs and finally version 4.01a in April 1989 as a further improvement. However many people didn't trust this and reverted to MS-DOS 3.3 while they waited for the complete re-write (MS-DOS 5.0 - 3 years later).
MS-DOS 4.01 fût publié en Novembre 1988 pour corriger les bugs et enfin la version 4.01a en Avril 1989 comme une amélioration supplémentaire. Cependant beaucoup d'utilisateurs n'ont pas fait confiance à cette révision et sont revenus à MS-DOS 3.3 pendant qu'ils attendaient la ré-écriture complète (MS-DOS 5.0, 3 ans plus tard).
MS-DOS 5.0
MS-DOS 5.0, released in June 1991, is very good and stable. It is the very first version to be able to load elements in HMA. It also allows you to use up to 8 hard disk drives, 2.88MB floppy disks. It also brings a fullscreen text editor, undelete, unformat and exchange task. And finally, it replaces GW-Basic by QBasic.
MS-DOS 5.0, sorti en Juin 1991, est très bon et stable. C'est la première version à pouvoir charger des éléments du système en HMA. Il supporte aussi jusqu'à 8 disques durs, ajoute le support des disquettes de 2,88 Mo (2880 Kio). Il apporte aussi un éditeur plein écran, undelete, unformat, et la tâche d'échange. Enfin, il remplace de GW-Basic par QBasic.
MS-DOS 6.0
MS-DOS 6.0 is from March 1993. It integrates an anti-virus, a conventionnal memory optimizing tool and a disk compression tool known as DoubleSpace. It also brought the possibility to create a start-up menu to choose between different configurations. A "pack" version exist as well to be used on 3 PCs. If installed as an update, the system requires : MS-DOS 2.11 or greater, OS/2, or a system compatible with MS-DOS 2.11 or greater. It requires a personnal computer with an 8088 CPU or greater and 512K of RAM.
MS-DOS 6.0 date de Mars 1993. Il intègre un anti-virus, un outil d'optimisation de mémoire conventionnelle et un logiciel de compression, DoubleSpace. Il apporte également la possibilité de faire un menu de démarrage pour choisir différentes configurations. Une version "Pack" existe également pour une utilisation sur trois PC. Il requiert un ordinateur personnel avec un processeur 8088 ou supérieur et 512K de RAM. Installé comme mise à jour, le système requiert: MS-DOS 2.11 ou supérieur, OS/2, ou un système d'exploitation compatible avec MS-DOS 2.11 ou supérieur.

MS-DOS 6.2, a great evolution from MS-DOS 6.0, was released in September 1993. Novelties in comparison to MS-DOS 6.0 : added ScanDisk to check the integrity of the HDD, bug fixes for the disk compression tool DoubleSpace that is now helped with DoubleGuard. The commands COPY, MOVE, and XCOPY now ask for a confirmation before replacing a file. Optimisations were added to SmartDrive, used as a read cache by default. It also adds the possibiltiy to select which commands in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT will be executed using F8 key at boot. And finally, HIMEM.SYS now checks the memory at boot (can be disabled by adding "/TESTMEM:OFF" in CONFIG.SYS).

Nouveautés par rapport à MS-DOS 6.0 : ajout du logiciel ScanDisk pour vérifier l'intégrité de son disque dur, correction de bugs dans logiciel de compression DoubleSpace, secondé par DoubleGuard. Les commandes COPY, MOVE et XCOPY demandent une confirmation avant l'écrasement d'un fichier. Des optimisations ont été faites pour SmartDrive, utilisé comme antémémoire de lecture par défaut. Possibilité de choisir les commandes des fichiers CONFIG.SYS et AUTOEXEC.BAT à exécuter en utilisant la touche F8 au démarrage. Enfin, il apporte une vérification automatique de la mémoire au démarrage par HIMEM.SYS (vérification qui peut être désactivée en utilisant "/TESTMEM:OFF" dans CONFIG.SYS).

MS-DOS 6.21 was released in February 1994. It removed DoubleSpace after a lawsuit of patent violation from Stac Electronics, editor of a competing software : Stacker. DoubleSpace used a compression system offering the same services as Stacker. Microsoft engaged negociations with Stac Electronics to acquire a licence, but no acknowledgement was concluded. In early 1994, Stac Electronics won their lawsuit against Microsoft.
MS-DOS 6.21 est sorti en Février 1994. Il supprima DoubleSpace à la suite d'une plainte pour violation de brevet de la part de Stac Electronics, éditeur d'un logiciel concurrent : Stacker. DoubleSpace proposait un système de compression offrant les mêmes services que Stacker. Microsoft avait entamé des négociations avec Stac Electronics pour acquérir une licence, mais aucun accord ne fut conclu. Début 1994, Stac Electronics remporta son procès contre Microsoft.
